On the fourth day of visiting Raleigh Parks we headed to North Raleigh to check out the newly constructed Strickland Road Park. It’s located at 12804 Strickland Road, not far from the intersection of Leesville Road. This park has picnic tables, benches, a walking trail with access from the nearby neighborhood, swings for kids of all ages, and a large playground area.
The playground area has equipment for kids ages 2-5 and 5-12 to use and all the equipment is in the same area making it convenient for parents with kids of different ages. There is a large jungle gym with monkey bars, slides, and climbing areas for the older kids. There is a sandy playground area and fun slide for the younger ones. Between the two areas is a sitting area with benches, which is nice for the parents. The nearby swingset has a spongy surface, which is great for crawlers to play around on. I also love that even though this is a new park, much of the surrounding woods are still in tact, making it seem like a real park. The new camellia bushes that have been planted are already in bloom adding some great color to the landscape.
According to the City of Raleigh’s website, there are future plans to add basketball courts and a community center to this park.
Thumbs up: playground areas, sitting areas for parents
Thumbs down: sidewalks on busy Strickland Rd would increase walk ability to this park
What happened to the dog park plans fir this “community” park? Those were amazing plans! Now only people with kids can use this area:-(
I didn’t realize there were plans to include a dog park. As a dog lover, that would’ve been great to have another option to take the furry ones. I did a little research online and couldn’t find anything about future plans to include a dog park or where the plans stand now…only that the dog park was stricken from the plans a few years ago. If I learn anything else I’ll be sure to let you know and update the post. Thanks for pointing out the history with the dog park.

I love this park, but recommend removal of a large rock located within the 2-5 age range side of the park. This large rock is located within a semi-circle wall, designed for the little ones to climb and walk on. However, there is significant danger to those walking atop the semi-circle wall – as a fall could land them against the rock! With all the sand atop the wall from the nearby sand pit, a potential fall is at risk.
Please remove the rock.
Thanks,
Sherry D
Hi Sherry,
Thanks for finding my blog and providing feedback about Strickland Park. Unfortunately, I’m not affiliated with the City of Raleigh Parks & Rec Dept and have no pull with what features to add/remove from parks. I’m sure they’d be glad to hear your thoughts and know that you take such great care in discovering and providing feedback on their parks.
Best,
Kris
Hi there,
My daughter LOVES this playground/park!! She wants to have her Birthday Party here on Saturday May 18th. Could you let me know if there are any fees and policies if we wanted to do this?
She just wants to have a few friends come play and have cake & ice cream at the picnic table.
Thanks in advance for anything you can do,
Julie

Hi Julie – as far as I know the picnic tables there are first come, first served so I imagine a little party there would be super fun for her and her friends. I don’t believe you can reserve the picnic tables, but you may want to contact the City Parks & Rec dept just in case to be sure – http://www.raleighnc.gov/arts/content/PRecRecreation/Articles/RentalInformationPicnicShelters.html
Enjoy!
